About the Carboun Institute

The Carboun Institute is the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region's first and only independent climate and energy policy think tank. It was established in 2025 as a Dutch foundation (Stichting). the Institute is dedicated to driving change through evidence-based research, policy analysis, and advocacy. Our work centers on accelerating decarbonization and energy transition, enhancing climate resilience and adaptation, and strengthening regional climate diplomacy.


Position Overview

The Carboun Institute seeks a creative, organised, and proactive Communications Manager to lead and support our communications, marketing, and digital engagement efforts. This is a unique opportunity to drive regional climate policy conversations and elevate the MENA region's voice in global climate debates through strategic communications that translate complex research into compelling narratives for policymakers and key stakeholders. This is a part-time (1-2 days per week) remote position with flexible working hours. The number of working days are expected to grow steadily in subsequent years.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications Planning

  • Lead development and implementation of comprehensive communications strategies that advance the Institute's policy influence goals

  • Develop measurable campaign objectives aligned with research outputs and advocacy priorities

  • Create data-driven communications strategies to optimize reach and influence with key policy audiences

  • Develop nuanced messaging on climate and energy topics in diverse political environments across the MENA region

Content Development & Management

  • Draft and edit high-quality written content including policy briefs, blogs, newsletters, and press releases

  • Translate complex climate research into compelling narratives for different audiences

  • Produce engaging social media content across platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter/X, etc.)

  • Manage the Institute's mailing list and regular newsletter communications

Digital & Social Media Leadership

  • Manage and grow the Institute's social media presence and online communities

  • Track, analyze, and report on digital engagement metrics to inform strategy refinement

  • Monitor media trends and identify strategic engagement opportunities

  • Implement targeted digital campaigns around research publications and events

Visual Communications & Multimedia

  • Develop compelling multimedia content including data visualizations and video stories

  • Create interactive formats that make complex climate research accessible to diverse audiences

  • Maintain consistent visual identity across all Institute communications

  • Coordinate with external designers or vendors for specialized design needs

Media Relations & External Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets across the MENA region

  • Coordinate press outreach and media engagement for major publications and events

  • Support the promotion of the Institute's research, events, and programs to key stakeholders

  • Represent the Institute at relevant communications and policy forums when needed

Technical & Operational Support

  • Manage and update the Institute's website content

  • Support the communications elements of webinars, workshops, and public events

  • Collaborate with research staff to effectively communicate technical findings

  • Contribute to institutional knowledge management and communications systems


Qualifications

Essential

  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills

  • Experience translating complex technical or policy content into compelling narratives for different audiences

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in communications, marketing, or social media management

  • Commitment to climate action and the mission of the Carboun Institute

  • English and Arabic language proficiency required

  • Proficiency in managing social media accounts and engagement

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment

  • Basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or similar tools)

  • Experience with website content management systems

Desirable

  • Experience in a think tank, non-profit, or international organisation.

  • Experience working in multicultural environments or international organizations, particularly with climate or energy focus

  • Additional regional languages (French, Turkish, Farsi, etc.) are highly valued.


Working Arrangements

  • This is a part-time remote position (1-2 days per week), location flexible with preference for those in MENA / Europe zones.

  • The number of working days are expected to grow steadily in subsequent years.

  • Reporting directly to the Executive Director.
